Congratulations to the 2023 American Society of Journalists and Authors Annual Writing Award Winners. As a judge this year, I had a chance to read some exceptional writing.

Welcome to my newest client, the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. This landmark building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its most famous commuter was President Teddy Roosevelt who commuted from his home at Sagamore Hill to New York, Washington, D.C. and beyond.

Back from a productive research trip to Tennessee for my next scriptwriting project, an interpretive audio tour for the Knoxville Museum of Art. It’s energizing to spend time with museum professionals who are so passionate about sharing the stories of these remarkable artists.

Professional writers can’t wait for inspiration. A deadline is a deadline. But when it comes to passion projects, the inspiration you get sharing with colleagues in an intimate, supportive setting is everything.

I hosted a literary salon that included a reporter, a newspaper columnist, a speechwriter, a content marketer, a journalism instructor, authors and event producers. For one night we put all our client work aside and read our personal essays and excerpts from books-in-progress, journal passages and–in my case–a play.

Writing a play or a novel or a personal essay may have nothing to do with our usual assignments, but I’d argue that when writers challenge themselves by expanding into new genres, their body of work inevitably becomes richer.

Excited to be leading a writing workshop later this month, helping people to turn their real-life experiences into compelling stories. It’s at the beautiful Meadowbrooke Pointe clubhouse on Long Island.

I’m all smiles on my first visit to the new Jackie Robinson Museum in Lower Manhattan. By chance, that great quote appeared on the film behind me just as the picture was taken. So privileged to have had a role in bringing the story of this sports legend, activist and role model to life.

My third year producing the Playing on the Porch music festival for the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce is in the books. For Long Island’s only “porchfest’ event, we lined up 32 bands, 23 sponsors, an 80-degree day and News 12 coverage. I managed to bike to a dozen homes. Now it’s time to tally up the donations to our “tip jar charity,” RVC Library Friends, an organization which makes this writer/book lover very happy.

Yesterday was the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Jackie Robinson Museum in Lower Manhattan. I started working with the museum in early 2020. We know what happened. Two years of delays. Then I spent much of this spring back at it. As the New York Times wrote this week, the museum is about a lot more than baseball. One of my favorite parts of the exhibit is the fan mail. A line from this letter gets me every time: “If your batting average never gets any higher than .100 and if you make an error every inning, if I can raise my boy to be half the man that you are, I’ll be a happy father.” The museum opens to the public September 5.
